Candy cane dog treat

Dec 11, 2020

Forget about toxic rawhide candy canes and try this natural recipe instead.

These dog friendly candy canes are such a fun treat for Christmas day!

Ingredients:

  • 275g flour (normal or chickpea flour)
  • ½ tsp baking powder
  • 200ml warm water with 1 salt free stock (veggie, chicken or beef)
  • 3 eggs
  • 3 tsp beetroot juice or 2tsp of natural food colouring.

Method:

  1. In a food processor with a dough hook, mix flour and baking powder.
  2. In a separate bowl, pour the warm water over the chicken bouillon, stir until dissolved.
  3. Add 2 eggs and whisk.
  4. Combine wet ingredients with dry ingredients in the food processor and mix until doughy.
  5. Separate your dough into two balls of the same size.
  6. Form a well in one of the dough ball and add the food colouring or beetroot juice. Wear gloves for this step 😉 Knead to combine.
  7. Roll each ball into a snake shape.
  8. Twist one plain strip with a red strip and shape a candy cane.
  9. Place on a baking tray lined with baking paper.
  10. Wisk the remaining egg in a bowl and coat the candy cane with the egg wash using a brush.
  11. Bake for 10min at 180 °C.

You can do a variant of this recipe using green natural colouring and adding a few drops of peppermint extract, making red and green "fresh breath" candy canes!
