Can dogs eat bananas?

Nov 7, 2021

Bananas are wonderful low-calorie snacks for us humans, but can you feed them to your dog? The answer is a resounding YES!

Adding variety of foods is always a fantastic idea and can help keep your pup motivated while training.

Let’s look at the benefits bananas can add to your dog’s diet.

Are bananas good for dogs?

Bananas are very healthy for dogs and although they’re naturally high in sugar, if fed in moderation, they bring great benefits to your dog’s health.

Bananas are rich in:

  • Potassium, an important mineral for muscle health. This means they make a great snack after a hike, for both you and your dog, to relieve muscle aches and cramps.
  • Fibre, which helps move food along the intestinal tract and resolve constipation, diarrhea, or other digestive issues.
  • Vitamin C, a powerful antioxidant that boosts your dog's immune system.
  • Vitamin B6, which regulates blood cell functions. Dogs cannot make their own vitamin B6, so they must get it through food.

How to feed bananas to my dogs? The different ways.

You can add bananas to your dog's diet in many ways!

  • Frozen: you can freeze the whole banana and encourage your dog to lick it (the licking action secretes endorphins, the happiness hormones).
  • Mashed: if you have a very ripped banana, mash it onto a Lickimat or mix it with your dog's regular food.
  • If your dog needs to take oral medication, you can squeeze pills into pieces of bananas to trick your dog.
  • Banana chips: homemade dried bananas. Store-bought banana chips are too high in sugar and other unnecessary preservatives.
  • In homemade treats to replace eggs.
  • As- is, simply peel and give raw pieces of banana.

A word of caution: do not feed your dog banana peels!
They’re not toxic to dogs, but the skin of bananas is hard to digest and may cause a blockage.

As a fruits, bananas should be given as a treat and in moderation.
